Hosting an NTX Mesh Repeater Node

Thinking about letting NTX Mesh place a repeater node on your roof, mast, or tower? This FAQ covers what the equipment is, how it's powered, what maintenance it needs, and how liability, permits, and removal work. Our solar-powered Meshtastic and MeshCore nodes are small, low-power, and self-sufficient — and they help extend a free, community-run mesh network across North Texas.

What It Is & How It Works

What exactly is the node used for?
It expands a free, open-source, community mesh network using low-power radio, enabling text-based communication in areas with limited cellular or internet coverage. The network acts like a city-wide text messaging system, letting people communicate publicly or privately with anyone on the mesh. It's often used for hiking, emergency readiness, and local community support.
What kind of equipment will be installed?
Typically a small, weatherproof box containing a microcontroller and battery, a lightweight antenna, and a solar panel. The whole assembly is usually under 2 pounds and compact — roughly the size of a router, though the antenna is longer.
How will it be powered?
Nodes are solar-powered and self-sufficient. They do not require any A/C power from your building.
What range and signal coverage will the node support?
Coverage depends on elevation and antenna, but typically 2–10 miles or more. The node helps connect devices over long distances through mesh relaying, operating in the license-free Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band at 902–928 MHz.
Installation

Mounting, Cabling & Maintenance

What kind of antenna or cabling is involved?
Usually a small external antenna mounted to a mast or pole. There is no cabling into the building and no A/C power required. Typical installations use magnets, u-bolts around a mast or pole, or hose clamps — no drilling or screwing required unless agreed upon.
What is the expected maintenance requirement?
Very low — nodes are designed to run autonomously for long periods. Occasional visits (e.g., once or twice a year) may be needed for firmware updates or hardware checks. Access terms can be set in writing.
Will the equipment interfere with my existing systems?
Extremely unlikely. The NTX Mesh network operates on different frequencies from Wi-Fi, cell, or TV systems and is extremely low power. It's designed to be non-disruptive and FCC-compliant. You can request testing or documentation if you're concerned.
Will this increase the chance my property is struck by lightning?
It's not expected to increase the likelihood of lightning. In any case, one reason we use solar-powered nodes — even in fixed locations — is to isolate the node from the electrical and low-voltage wiring in the structure.
Agreements

Liability, Permits & Removal

What are the liability implications?
The building owner carries the liability, though the likelihood of an incident is not expected to be material.
Are there permits, HOA, zoning, or regulatory issues to be aware of?
Permits are generally not needed for small antennas or non-commercial installations. HOA or building rules may restrict roof modifications, so check before proceeding. If you're a tenant or part of a shared property, it's best to get written permission first.
How long will the node stay, and can it be removed?
We'll work together to determine a clear timeframe or agreement. There's no long-term obligation — you may request removal at any time, with coordination and reasonable time allowed for removal. Removal should leave no permanent marks or damage.

No strings attached. Hosting a node is voluntary, requires no A/C power or building penetrations, and can be ended whenever you like. We're happy to put access and removal terms in writing.
